Can I Be Enrolled In Medicare and Medicaid At The Same Time?
Having trouble figuring out how Medicare and Medicaid work together if at all?
Stay tuned. I’ll be sharing with you the details and even a specific recommendation of which Medicare plans you should enroll in and why.
But first a brief introduction. My name is Greg Howard. I’m regional manager for USA Benefits Group, author of Medicare Made Easy, a 3-step guide to enrolling in Medicare, host of the internet talk radio show “Would The Real Obamacare Please Stand Up”, and a Medicare broker since 2009. All of that and $5 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. 😊
Having said all of that, now let’s take a look at the marriage of Medicare and Medicaid.
People who are eligible for Medicaid and Medicare are known as dual eligible. About 20 percent of Medicare beneficiaries are also eligible for Medicaid.
ELIGIBILITY Eligibility for each is independent of the other. Medicaid eligibility is determined by each state. Medicare eligibility is determined by the federal government. Many low-income seniors living in nursing homes are dual eligible – qualifying for Medicare based on their age, and for Medicaid based on their low income and assets. Medicaid pays for their custodial or long-term care that Medicare does not cover.
CLAIMS When dual eligible beneficiaries have claims, Medicare pays first and then Medicaid pays.
PREMIUM ASSISTANCE Medicaid can also provide assistance in paying your Medicare Part B premium if you qualify.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS If you have Medicare and Medicaid, you may be able to enroll in a special health plan that covers the services of both programs, and may offer extra benefits. For example, some plans for people with Medicare and Medicaid offer extra coverage for hearing aids, vision or dental care.
WHAT MEDICARE PLANS ARE THE BEST FIT? Medicaid programs recommend enrolling in Medicare Advantage plans and in many cases cover the expenses of deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance involved in a Medicare Advantage plan. You’ll need to talk with someone at your local Medicaid office to determine what you specifically qualify for. We can assist you in finding the best Advantage plan in your area and getting enrolled for it. The Medicaid folks cannot help with that.
WHAT WAY YOU?

"Getting setup on Medicare and Medicaid has been a real blessing to me. I have good coverage better coverage now than I had with just Medicaid and a better prescription plan. It's freed up money that used to go for my medicine for other things. Thanks to the folks at medicare made easy for holding my hand me through the process."
